Patriotism

I have recently been accused of thriving on controversy, so I figured I would write a controversial post.

Patriotism. What is it?

Dictionary.com gives the following definitions:

1. Love of and devotion to one’s country. — The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition. Houghton Mifflin Company, 2004

2. Devoted love, support, and defense of one’s country; national loyalty. — Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1). Random House, Inc.

3. Love of country and willingness to sacrifice for it; — WordNet® 3.0.

Three similar definitions, each giving a similar sense of what the word means, but each with its on specific idea.

There is probably no one in America that would question definition #1. Love and devotion to our country. Most Americans would claim to be a patriot in that sense of the word without hesitating. But if someone loved and was devoted to this country wouldn’t they at the least vote in its elections. Yet I know many good people who will not even take a little time out of their busy schedule to stop by the polling place and cast a vote on election day.

Definition 2 however, states that you must love your country, support it, and defend it. Not too many Americans are willing to defend the country. To defend it means that you must be willing to fight for it. You must be willing to beat up the bullies who want to tear it down. The parasites who are living within it, and are destroying it from the inside out. A true defender will expose these parasites (BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA), and we will keep them out of power. Part two of this definition says National Loyalty. Liberals in this country claim to be Patriotic yet daily they bring up its short comings. They talk about the greatness of Canada and Europe with their Socialism. They talk about the evils of a country which wants to keep illegals out. These morons want us to think that they are patriotic. Not according to definition #2. National Loyalty is just that, it is being loyal to your nation. Not trying to tear it down. Not insulting it and its principles. I believe that National Loyalty requires us to support the Constitution as it was written, and not attempting to redefine it. No, Liberals (HILLARY CLINTON) are not loyal to their country, and they are not patriots.

Definition 3 goes a step farther. It says that patriotism includes sacrifice. How many Americans are willing to sacrifice for their country (JOHN MCCAIN). Well, today we have approximately 3 million men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces. These are men and women who have made sacrifices to serve their country. This is real patriotism. As a matter of fact, I believe this is the only true act of patriotism for men who are able to serve. In other words, able bodied men who do not serve are not patriots. They are not making sacrifices for their country.

According to definition #1 someone who flies a flag in his yard and stands for the National Anthem might be considered a patriot. According to # 2 a person would have to defend his country and be loyal to it. And according to # 3 a person would have to make sacrifices for it.

As I look around me I see the multitude of young men who have not answered their country’s call. I remember having several discussions with some teenage boys around 98 as I had just gotten out of active duty, and encouraged them to enlist in the military and do their duty. I had some of them tell me that they didn’t have a problem with serving, but that they didn’t believe their country needed them at the moment. But if it ever did, they would be ready. I remember hearing preachers tell about how they were too old to serve, but if their country was ever attacked they would put their boys on the first bus to Paris Island, SC. Well guess what happened? September 11, 2001. And what did those teenagers do? They hid behind mommy’s skirt, and never even considered doing their duty. What about that preacher’s sons? Well they never saw Paris Island.

Why does this bother me? It bothers me because Christians should be the most patriotic people around. Yet, after 8 years of military service I see exactly the opposite. It is rare that a Christian ever answers the call to serve his country. Why is that? Let’s see, Patriotism is about love, dedication, loyalty, sacrifice, and defense. Jesus Christ was about the same thing. He was loving, dedicated to His mission, Loyal to His Father, became the ultimate Sacrifice. What better way to emulate Jesus Christ than to be a Patriot. Defend the Country that God let you be born in. Defend the right to worship Him freely. Defend the right to declare His Word in public. That is Patriotism, and that is Christian.

God help this country! We have a bunch of coward men who are going to be running our churches, businesses, and government in the next few years. We have a bunch unloyal women who will not sacrifice an hour of soap opera to cast a vote for a Conservative candidate on election day. Christians are giving this country away, and we will be the first to complain when we are told that we can no longer preach the Bible, take our children to Sunday School, teach that homosexuality is an abomination, or refuse to send our children to public schools. Wake up Church!

Here is what I think we need:

  1. All able bodied Christian men 30 and under should make a sacrifice and volunteer to defend America. Quit being cowards!
  2. All older men and those unable to serve should pledge to support those who are serving. Write them and pray for them.
  3. All men and women should make sure that they vote in all elections and cast their vote for the most conservative candidate available (MIKE HUCKABEE).
  4. All Christians should spend more time in prayer for this country and for its leaders (GEORGE BUSH).
  5. Preachers in churches need to emphasize the importance of believers serving this country. Quit telling young men that the military is no place for them. Just because you cowarded out doesn’t mean they should.

Thank God for those men and women who have answered the call. Thank God for those who are currently serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and all the other parts of the world. Let’s remember to pray for them. And let’s remember which of our presidential candidates is a war hero. Let’s remember who was a real patriot. No, I don’t agree with everything he does either, but God help us if either of these other two up-chucks get elected.

God Bless America!!!
