John 1:1

This is the first post of many in this category. I am going to start with John and try to work my way through the book, posting my thoughts about selected passages. This isn’t going to be an in depth study, but just a way to keep myself in the Bible, and to share with those who care to read.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

I love the beginning of the Gospel of John. It starts out with the same three words that appear in Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning.” In the beginning the Word was already present, and dwelling with God who was also in the beginning. And then we see that the Word was God. Genesis 1:1 goes on to say that “God created the heavens and the earth,” and John 1:3 tells us that all things were made by the Word, and without Him nothing was made.

The Word is from the Greek term ‘Logos.’ The Word is Jesus Christ. This same Jesus, who comes to earth (John 1:14) to be the ultimate Sacrifice for the sin of the whole world, was with God from the beginning, and was the Creator of all things in the world.

What does that mean to us? Well, it says a lot. What I think about right now is how it declares the nature of our God, especially His love. While creating man, the Word was totally aware of the future sinfulness of man. He was totally aware of the eternal state of sinful man. He was totally aware of the requirement that would be necessary for the salvation of sinful man. So Jesus Christ had already volunteered to leave His position with God, as the Creator, and come to earth as a man. He was totally willing, even while creating man, to pay the price with His life. Then He followed through with His plan, and did exactly what had to be done. He loved me, and gave Himself for me (Galatians 2:20).

People who don’t know Him, wonder why Christians live differently. I don’t expect them to understand, for our understanding is not of our own, but it is of a new mind. God has placed in us a desire to live according to His will and Christ has empowered us to do so by giving His life for us. Yes, we have everything we need to glorify God. Not only that, but we have the awesome example of Jesus.

Yes we have everything we need, but yet we fail to give Christ free rule of our lives. We oppose Him, and by doing so we hinder the work of the Gospel. How shameful it is for Christians to live for themselves. How sad that those who have the Word appear no different than those who know not of Him.

God help us to give you full control. God help us to be used by you, and not oppose your work for our selfish desires. God help us to point others to you, and let them see the true nature of a changed life in us. And may those who don’t know you as their Lord and Savior come to know you today.

Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13
